Pan American Games Day 00 | Opening Ceremonies

Opening Ceremonies

To say that today was an exhausting day would be an understatement. The excitement of the opening ceremonies has me still up writing this blog post even though it is 3:00am and I need to be up by 7:00am.

The United States Olympic Committee provided Ben and I with tickets to the opening ceremonies. Ben and I went to the Nikon NPS booth yet again where I borrowed a 14-24mm lens and Ben traded in all of his Canon gear for Nikon for a day.

We then spent a few hours trying to figure out how to get to Rhythmic Gymnastics. We wanted to photograph some training today before the ceremonies but because of the special event none of the busses were running like they normally would. We ended up having to go to Athlete Village on the other side of town where we talked our way into riding with the United States rhythmic gymnastics team to the venue.

Photographed the Mexican team and the US team training;

And then did everything we could to get back to the stadium in time for the Opening Ceremonies. We ended up riding back with the US team again and then walking most of the way from athlete village to the stadium. If I had to guess I would say it is around a mile and a half. We got to the stadium with plenty of time but we were certainly some of the last press to show up, cramming into my assigned seat in a crowed of other photographers was an adventure, but all went according to plan and we got in, shot, and got out.

I will update this post tomorrow with more details and story about the opening ceremonies but for now I need to get some sleep. Early morning tomorrow and off to photograph something…. pentathlon? Gymnastics? who knows?
