Pan American Games Day 04 | Cycling at the Velodrome

October 18th, 2011

Cycling at the Velodrome

Today was the first time at the games that I shot at one venue for the whole day. It was nice because I had a three hour break at lunch time where I edited photos and just relaxed, but it was unfortunate in that all of my photos from the day are very similar and I was stuck eating gross, expensive, venue food for lunch.

The photos that I took in the morning at the prelim rounds were from the audience level above the track. There were a lot of other photographers but it was a good vantage point where you could see most of the track.

Oct. 17, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - GADIEL CANELON of Venezuela competes in the Men's 200m flying start qualifying round at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - LLARELY CONTRERAS of Mexico starts to race during the 200m flying start women's qualifying round at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 17, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - The Brazilian cycling team crosses the finish in the women's 3000m team pursuit qualifying round at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 17, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - From left, DIANA GARCIA of Columbia and DANIELA GAXIOLA of Mexico race across the finish line in the 200m flying start women's qualifying round at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 17, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - MICHAEL BLATCHFORD of the United States of America celebrates after setting a new Pan American Games record in the Men's 200m flying start qualifying round at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games. Blatchford's record was bested by FABIAN PUERTA of Columbia who raced next. Both athletes will advance to the finals this afternoon.

In the afternoon I went to the infield photo position for a different angle on the track. The competition in the finals was intense and there were a few crashes. The Canadian team won the Team Pursuit event. If you have never seen team pursuit (I hadn’t until today) it is a lot of fun to watch, three cyclists drafting with each other, racing against the clock. I know its the obvious thing that everyone does, but it lends itself to some beautiful panning shots.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - The Canadian women's cycling team, STEPHANIE ROORDA, JASMIN GLAESSER, and LAURA KATHERINE BROWN, race in the women's team pursuit finals at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games. The Canadian team won gold in the women's team pursuit event.

The men’s races were also intense including the Omnium Points Race, a 100+ lap race that sort of resembles nascar. Every man for himself trying to earn as many points as possible. It is a lot of cyclists on the track at the same time.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - Cyclists round the first corner during the Men's Omnium points race at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - JACOB DYLAN SCHWINGBOTH of Canada looks to the score board after crashing in the final laps of the Men's Omnium points race at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - LUIS MANSILLA of Chile races to finish first on one of the laps of the Men's Omnium points race at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

The Omnium Elimination race is also interesting. The slowest cyclist every lap is eliminated until eventually only one is left.

The day ended with the men’s sprint quarterfinals and semifinals.

Oct. 18, 2011 - Guadalajara, Mexico - JAMES DAVID WATKINS of the United States of America crosses the finish line ahead of HERSONY GADIEL CANELON of Venezuela during the mens sprint quarterfinals at the Pan American Veolodrome, part of the Pan American Games.

All in all an interesting day of photography and a sport that I had never seen before. I like days like this.
