Pan American Games Day 06 | Tennis and Volleyball

October 23rd, 2011

Today I photographed Tennis Semifinals in the morning and Volleyball Finals in the afternoon. Unfortunately I had to leave volleyball finals early or risk missing the last bus back to my hotel, but I was able to stay and photograph the entire bronze medal game between the USA and the Dominican Republic.

Volleyball was interesting because at a lot of the venues they make all of the photographers work from the audience seats. At a lot of events this is a less than ideal situation but I was actually looking forward to it at volleyball because it is one of those sports that is really nice to photograph from a high angle. Unfortunately the organizers must have known that was what I wanted to do because the set-up was the exact opposite. We were herded into a box on the floor level and I had to talk my way up into the stands where I was allowed to stay for two sets. It was worth it because shooting from above allowed me to become a little bit acclimated to the action and it yielded some nice backgrounds. Then, when I went down to the floor I was looking mostly for the reaction and celebration from the winning team.
