Pan American Games Day 12 | Diving and Water Polo

October 30th, 2011

Today was the first time I have ever photographed competitive diving. Throughout my life diving has always been one of my favorite olympic events. Whenever the summer Olympics came around I remember being very excited to watch diving on TV, the swimming sports were really all I ever cared about in my younger years.

What I decided today was that although diving is a lot of fun to watch it is very challenging to photograph well. Part of this I blame on the light, which was far from Olympic lighting standards, I may have had more fun if diving was an outdoor sport, and part of the challenge is making a diver’s graceful motions look graceful in a still image.

Diving was women’s 10m platform individual and men’s synchronized 3m springboard.

Preliminaries started at 10:00am and fthe finals weren’t until 7:30pm but I decided to make my life easy by spending all day at the pool, so I photographed water-polo in the middle of the day. I always enjoy water polo because it is a sport that I had never seen until I moved to California. It is also fun to watch and I can only imagine the strength and endurance it must take for the players not to drown during the hour+ long match.
