Fran Weinbaum lives in Montpelier where she raises Norwegian Dwarf goats. This season she has 8 new kids, at least 4 of which she will be selling as pets, so Meredith, Katharine, and I stopped by to visit and to help socialize the new kids. They’re very cute.

Meredith and I visited her mother who is working this summer at Jackson’s Lodge in Canaan Vermont, right near the Canadian Border. It was unseasonably cold this weekend and we even saw some late season snow as we drove north to visit the Coaticook Gorge in Coaticook Canada on Saturday.

Art Shows and Wedding Dresses

Barb Austin-Hutchins is the Art Teacher at Montpelier High School. Every year her students display their work in the annual Art Show and Barb has an annual tradition of re-working an old wedding dress in her signature style to wear at the event. I photographer her with her creation this year right before the show.

My evening shift for the Times Argus started with a track meet and Boys Lacrosse at U-32 High School and then a band and chorus variety show at Twinfield Union School

Mother’s Day!

In honor of Mother’s day I photographed a Mother’s day nature walk at the North Branch Nature Center and a few other mother-child scenes.

In celebration of spring, and Mother’s Day of course, the North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier held a Mothers’ Day Wildflower Walk. Lead by Americorps members Ken Benton and Zach Johnston saw about 20 children, mothers, fathers, and community members exploring the fields and trails at the nature center looking for wildflowers and other signs of spring.

A Final Farewell to the TImes Argus Printing Press

The Times Argus printing press was damaged in the summer of 2011 in Hurricane Irene and hasn’t been operated since. The newspaper has been printed off-site through a third-party printing company in New York state for the last two years. The publishers of the times argus recently decided to sell the building where the printing press and editorial staff have worked in Barre Vermont. The editorial staff is moving to new offices in a smaller suite in downtown Barre and the press was sold for scrap. After being moved out of the building the press sat in the parking lot for a few days where I photographed it. Many of the last plates from the day before the storm hit can be seen on the drums advertising everything from yard sales to the United Way and a headline about extreme weather in Vermont.

May 7, 2013 – Spaulding Sports and Montpelier Construction Projects

Today started with working on a couple of stories about construction and re-development projects in Montpelier and I finished the day photographing Spaulding Golf and Softball in Barre.

A load of sheetrock is delivered by Trowel Trades Supply Inc. to a third-floor window in the City Center in Montpelier on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. The City Center is undergoing renovation on two fronts, the front steps, and interior work on some third-floor space.

A man approaches the railroad bridge behind Montpelier Beverage and Redemption Center in Montpelier. Since the bridge has been closed to all but railroad traffic there has been no way for pedestrians to connect directly between the high school section of the bike path and the section that continues on Stone Cutters Way. If the city is able to acquire the Carr Lot and Montpelier Beverage a new pedestrian bridge would be part of the plan to connect the bike path. (Photographed by Adam Caira on Tuesday, May 7, 2013)

The Dig Team – Waterbury Bike Park

I photographed The Dig Team working in the Waterbury Bike Park last week for a gallery in the Saturday edition of the Times Argus

The Dig Team is a small, dedicated, group of volunteer riders who spend a few days a week throughout the summer caring for the Waterbury Bike Park. Located on River Rd. within view of the Waterbury Ice Center, the Waterbury Bike Park is in its fourth year, after being destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene it was wiped flat and completely re-designed last summer.. Head Developer and Coordinator James Bordeaux says “In the early, early spring we try to come down and clean everything up.” Then, throughout the summer The Dig Team “does some maintenance, makes sure things are safe, put it all together, and make it fun for everybody.” For more information visit waterburybikepark.webs.com

April 27, 2013 – Thunder Road Car Show and a Brush Fire in Orange

My Times Argus Sunday started off with the Thunder Road car show in Barre Vermont. Race car drivers from all over the state to display their cars on Main Street in Barre and promote the start of the racing season. The weather so far this spring has been unusually dry and while I was editing photos back at the office a call came over the radio for a brush fire in Orange.

Barre Town Firefighters work on a brush fire that destroyed a 1988 Ford F-250 pickup truck and a shed containing some power equipent and other assorted tools before firefighters were able to get the blaze under control. The fire, which started at about 3:15pm, burned about an acre of Alice Smith’s land on Smith Road in Orange, Vermont on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Sylvia O’Brien, Smith’s daughter, was burning some old growth out of a raised garden when a gust of wind caused the fire to spread. O’Brian and another neighbor both called 911. Crews responded from Barre Town, Plainfield, and Washington, they were able to get the fire contained before it spread to Alice Smith’s mobile home where she lives adjacent to the property that was scorched.

Moving House

My parents just moved, and, while they had a lot of things to move with them, fortunately they left the house behind.

Troy Maxham on the other hand, bought the house that the Barre Technical Center’s building trades program assembled more than a decade ago at Spaulding High School and he is moving it … the whole thing… to a parcel of land he owns in Vershire.
